With this statement comes an understanding that in order for there to be ashes there needs to be a fire that causes destruction, a destruction in which something of value or significance is burned to ruins. Usually, this tragedy is caused by someone making a bad and selfish decision and most of the time there are victims who are left to pick up the singed pieces of their dreams. It takes inner strength and resolve to rise from those ashes. Similarly, the economic problem in America has forced many to begin a new.

Today, we find that this financial disaster has dealt a devastating blow to our dreams. Companies that were once the examples to follow are now virtually non existent. The lack of integrity of our business leaders has made it nearly impossible to win back the confidence of consumers. What is a new business owner supposed to do in these troubled times? One thing I can say for sure is that just because matters are difficult does not mean you should give up on your dreams, passions, and ideas. I believe that dreams are born from adversity, and if you look hard enough there are opportunities in every situation. Ray Kroc, Bill Gates, and Jack Welch are prime examples of business leaders who have broken through the walls of difficulty and achieved great success during economic unrest. Jack Welch, for example, transformed GE from a 14 billion dollar company to the most valuable and largest corporation in the world, with a market value of over $130 billion by 2001, according to Fortune Magazine.

If you are still not convinced then let me share some names of companies that have risen from the ashes of economic disasters, left behind by poor financial decision makers. Fed Ex, Microsoft, McDonalds, GE, and Disney, to name a few, began during a recession period in America. Their entrepreneurial spirits took risks and pursued opportunities ignored by many. When others folded on their dreams, these great companies unfolded new ideas, thus creating a new paradigm for others to follow. They did not create products first to then sell it to the people; they created products for the people. They sold what consumers wanted! Many of us believe that when a problem arises, a solution is usually imminent. Well, the same mindset should be applied here. When there is a problem with our products selling, then it is time to think of a solution, and that usually means rethinking our business strategy. It is important that you start your approach by listening carefully to the consumer’s needs. Remember, the consumer fuels the economy and if they are not buying then businesses will suffer, jobs will be at stake, and the quality of life in our nation will diminish. It is imperative that leaders carefully think through ideas before rendering a final decision. One who thinks well can become recession proof.

That’s why the companies that I mentioned above should serve as an inspiration to first time business owners. In a recession, entrepreneurs have opportunities that a stable economy usually does not offer. Like flexible low interest business loans, partnerships, and new problems. Yes, problems! Problems release the creative mind to find solutions for the needs of the time. For example, bad bank practices create a need for new banks to emerge with a standard for integrity, high gas prices and gas guzzlers create a need for more fuel efficient cars. Well you get the idea. Now, what are you going to do about the dream that has been entrusted to you? Are you going to let the sorrows of our recession dictate the direction of your leadership and ideas?

I hope not!

I believe there are people that have what it takes to build the next fortune 500 company, the next GE, McDonalds, or Disney. Their ideas might not only the save American business, but also improve the quality of life, health, and self esteem for millions of people who have been crying out for hope. There are those that no matter what fires have engulfed their lives or businesses, or what little is left behind from the chaos, they have the drive, focus, and vision to make it through. It is time for those new entrepreneurs to rise up from the ashes and take their dreams to flight. If this season of opportunity is seized, great things can occur for them, their families, and companies. Are you the next success story, or should we wait for another? If so, be a leader who will not only climb the ladder to success but one who will climb with the needs of the people in mind. Remember the need and not the greed. Be a thinker and a problem solver. Evaluate, adjust, and change ideas if necessary. Let determination and vision shield you from the fires of adversity. But if ever you should fall into ashes, remember to rise.

A LETTER TO MY FATHER

This is to the greatest leaders of them all, our fathers. I don’t mean our fore fathers I mean our fathers, our dads, and our first buddies. They are our heroes and everything we aspire to be. We look up to them, and as small little tots we put on their clothes and shoes. We sit on their laps while they guide our hands on the steering wheel and show us how to drive on a motionless car in the driveway. They play catch with us and video tape all our games and events. They teach us how to shave, tie a Windsor knot, and shine our shoes. They make sure we go to church on Sunday to give thanks for our many blessings. They give us advice on the big game and pointers on how to romance the girl next door. When life gets hard they are there to support and guide us through it all. Yes, our dads are great leaders; their job is to turn us from boys to men and it's not easy.

A father has a great responsibility of ensuring that his family stays strong throughout life’s challenges. Yet, he could only accomplish this when he himself is healthy, wise, and strong. What happens if he doesn’t maintain a regimen of self discipline and strength? He will eventually fail in his leadership and those under his care will suffer the consequences. For me I did not have all of the ball catching and shoe shining experiences because my dad made some bad choices, and as a result I was left without a positive male role model to follow. Most of my childhood experiences were uneventful due to his absence. I was left with a painful feeling that to this day I have not been able to shake off. I recently wrote a letter to my dad but I have never mailed it because I don’t know where he is. This letter is mainly my cry for hope. It’s an aspiration of one day seeing him, but also it's a course in what not to do to yourself and family. I hope that what you are about to read inspires you to be a better father and also be reminded to be careful of your the decisions you make. This letter expresses the effects of my dad’s absence on me. I believe that I am not alone in my sentiments.

A Letter to My Father

Daddy I miss you
Where are you?
Are you safe?
Are you hungry?
Can I come and see you?
Do you want to see me?
Why didn’t you ever mention me when you wrote letters to mommy?
I’ve always wondered about that. It burns to think that you don’t love me or that you are disappointed with me for what ever reason.

I’m 37 years old now and we haven’t spoken as father & son since I was about 10 years old. Remember that day daddy, when you came to my school to see me. You gave me two dollars and kissed me; that was the last day we were together. The time with you was just for a moment but I remember it always.

You didn’t see me again after that time but I saw you. You see daddy, let me explain. I became a Christian and preacher years after your last visit but you never knew it was me. I spoke to you many times during the winter and summer nights and brought you food to eat; but I was too afraid to let you know who I was. You were trapped in your world and I felt powerless to help you. I am sorry I didn’t tell you I was your son. I must admit that I was ashamed of what you have become. You were once my hero and now you roam the city streets alone and with no place to lay your head. The demon in the bottle stole our years and memories. You gave up your dignity and catered to your addiction. Your new found liquid god enslaves your soul and keeps you internally incarcerated. Your decisions separated us and wounded our relationship.

But I am here to say that I still miss you and part of me earnestly needs your fatherly love, strength, and advice. I don’t feel complete without you. Father’s day is really difficult. I wish for us to be a normal family. O how I’ve dreamed of days when you would walk through the front door and say hey son how was school today? The pain of your absence is a searing pain; like if I am on fire. Your presence now would be like a rain shower that extinguishes the flames and stops the pain.

Daddy, where are you? I want to tell you that I am your son now. I regret not telling you when I had the chance to do so. I want to let you know that I love you and that I am doing okay; God has really blessed me. I have a family of my own now. I have great wife, a daughter name Hannah, and a son. His name is Andrew, I named him after you. When I call out his name I am also calling out for you.

I wish you were here; I need you more than you would ever know. The years without you have been cold and dark, and I need your warmth and light to keep me going. My eyes are longing to see your face. My ears are closing because they don’t hear your voice. I need you to come and energize my soul. I need you to be my father and I want to be your son.

Can you come and visit me again daddy, just like you did when I was 10? I will wait for you right by the steps of my old school. I will be sitting there until you come.
Is 3:00 okay daddy?

To all those that read this, I sincerely hope that you remember that your influence has a profound affect on those around you. To the fathers I say to you please maintain self discipline and don't let addictions steal your dignity. Your sons, daughters, and wives need for you to be strong against the temptations of life. Stay on your guard and don't fail in your responsibilities as a leader, father, and a daddy. Be a warrior and a protector to what you hold dear. Sons and daughters, take the time to speak to your dad and let him know that you love and care for him deeply. Do it today because you only get one shot at it; make it a good one.

LEADERSHIP UNDER FIRE

The way leaders comeback from personal or ethical attacks is by continuing to be mentally strong, vision focused, and guarded against outside distractions. They need to maintain principles of integrity when everything around them is falling a part. But for those that don’t, a downfall is imminent. There is an old proverb that says “He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls”. Its meaning is simple, yet its application can have its challenges. When under pressure it’s important to remain diligent and true to who you are. If not, the stress of the matter can overtake your focus, drive, and even threaten your moral compass. The true form of ones character is revealed when the fire is turned up.

For this reason you must learn to have self control if you are to be a person of influence. Your overall leadership success is based upon your reactions and dealings to difficult situations. A leader must also take into account that there are other risks involved if proactive measures are not taken. It’s not just your position that’s at stake but also those of your team. Leadership in one word is trust, and many people are counting on you to guide them through the storms of business. They have confidence that you will succeed no matter what obstacles you confront, so don’t betray their trust by caving into the pressure like those that failed before you. Fight the negatives that attack your team and business with a heart of a warrior.

Let be real here, business in America hasn’t been easy lately, thanks to those whose idea of success is to deceive and steal. We must take back the business spirit of old and revive it with true leaders who care. America will only be as great as those who are in charge of the front lines. So today, I invite you to put on your best pin stripped armor of strength, carry your portfolio of integrity, and go to battle against the flames of greed and corruption. Bring back a better standard of business to a new generation that awaits its arrival.

USING WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT

If you have had a few setbacks lately I am here to assure you that no matter how bleak your situation looks it is only temporary. Times will get better and you will bounce back. In the meantime it is important that you do not lose hope or your mental freshness. Losing a career or a business can be very difficult and the temptation to give up is a possiblity for most. Today, I would like to encourage you to consider some ideas that I believe can help revive you. A new start, career, or business venture is nearer than you think. Here are some ways to get you moving again.

1. Network - Find a way to get back on track and usually those that you know can help you get there. Networking is the number one method to expand your success in any industry. Stay connected with friends, colleagues, co-workers, and community or faith organizations such as your local borough hall, PTA, churches or synagogues. These connections of people & places are like a diamond in the rough, they are filled with great opportunity. But to benefit you must humble yourself and get out there.

2. Study or learn a new skill – Use your time wisely and improve yourself, especially if you lost your source of income. Increase your marketability by studying a new skill, software program, language, leadership courses and etc; well you get the picture. What you learn during this time can be the determining factor to your next open door.

3. Exercise – It is important that you maintain a workout regimen to keep your body strong and your mind sane. Depression will be knocking on your door every minute and exercising can help to fend him off. Consult with your doctor and find out what is the best form of exercise for your physical condition.

Finally, use what you are good at. Most people I know have a great skill outside of their careers and you are no different. This can usually be discovered by examining yourself. Maybe your spouse or friends have been poking you to do something with that talent you have. You know that thing you are passionate in doing. Whether you have a knack for fixing things organizing, decorating, cooking, or selling you should pursue your passion. Most individuals who put this concept to the test find out that their lives and careers become much more satisfying. I know that life can be cruel and unfair and it seems as if you can’t win, but success will find you again. Your greatest comeback awaits you. Come on I know you can do this.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING?

Sometimes getting to a destination can be tricky, especially if you have never been there before, so a map is vital to assist you in that task. If you don’t have a map or a guide of some sort, you could jeopardize the trip by arriving late or getting lost. If your traveling involves bringing others along, then it is important that their confidence in your navigating skills is maintained, the experience enjoyable, and the trip a success. Equally so, a leader must be able to take his followers from the starting point to the ending point without having lost perspective along the way. Every leader’s success is contingent upon understanding what is at stake and executing a plan of action to get you there. In business it is very much the same. If you want to take the company or department on a winning road, then you must map out the route carefully. Its director should communicate the vision to every team member precisely.

Leaders also need to recognize the knowledge, creativity, and tolerance level of every person involved. Once this is done and you have carefully selected your group, then and only then are you to assign important projects to them. But be sure that they have all the tools necessary to handle the task and accomplish the overall business goals. Most importantly, help then to believe that no matter what obstacle may be ahead the objective will be accomplished.

Still, your job does not end there. Remember that a good leader is also a good coach! Make sure you are available for your team. Whether physically or just a phone call away, be available for teaching and mentoring at all times. Don’t delegate your leadership role to anyone! Remember that you are leading the charge and it’s your responsibility to finish with victory.

I will conclude by saying that without a map that charts the path a leader will fail miserably. I caution you not to start your endeavors until everything is thoroughly mapped out. Set your travels knowing that you have packed your ideas carefully, filled your tank with knowledge, and cleaned the windshield to see what is ahead of you. When proper measures are taken there are no boundaries that can keep you from arriving at your destination.

BUSINESS BEWARE

I recall a conversation I had with my kids when we were at the ice cream store one day. On that particular occasion I was somewhat annoyed when I noticed that there was no place to sit. The store owner only had two chairs with no table near the window and of course they were already taken. I asked myself, why only two chairs and what is the deal with having no table? My kids also looked around the store and each commented as to why wasn't there a place for us to sit. Neither of us said anything more about it but I knew that it was an uncomfortable feeling for them. We made the best of our time together by standing and making casual conversation about how good the ice cream tasted. As I pondered over the ice cream maker’s ridiculous customer service strategy, I thought to myself I am probably not bringing my kids to this store again. It was not only the sitting dilemma that influenced my decision but also how the place looked. It had poor lighting, the floors were dirty and the decor was gloomy to say the least. The owner never seemed to have a good selection; neither did he have an inviting smile.

As a customer I was not at ease, and as a business enthusiast I was disappointed that the owner did not do more for his customers. Let’s face it, your customer base will ultimately determine the growth of your business not just your product. Yes, if you have a good product your customers will come back but if someone else has a similar product and yet offers more for that same dollar; I will bet that those customers will begin to shop at the new place instead. I know I will! Your company must evolve and flow with the new spectrum of business for each season. The needs of your customers will not always be the same. People change, and so will your customers. Because they are people and not robots; who are programmed to do the same thing over and over again. It’s simple, people follow change not repetition.

Is your business adapting to consumer needs, or is your company suffering because you're not? While I write this entry I’ve learned that the neighborhood ice cream shop has closed its doors, along with others that have been there for a long time. Now you might say the economy is bad and that is the reason, but I don’t think it was due to the economy. I live here and I’ve seen all of these stores and everything was always the same. In the 1980’s and early 1990's the economy was pretty bad, not as bad as it is now, but still it had similar effects for businesses. Yet, those companies that saw the handwriting on the wall made changes that spawned longevity for their business, even through today. Others who did not adhered to the winds of change and did not make the investments necessary were never heard from again.

If you love something you do not let it slip from your hands or let it die. You cultivate and restructure the areas needed to make it strive, live, and prosper. There is a Japanese word that signifies this business principle and if applied you will reap its benefits; that word is Kaizen. It means constant continuous improvement. I believe that its concept could even be used for our personal development. We all could use a little improvement every so often, but I’ll save that discussion for another time.

Business owner, leader, and potential CEO, you have worked extremely hard with your dreams to allow a little slow down to effect its growth. I hope you will consider the ideas I have presented. Please remember –

1. Customers want more: The decreasing value of the dollar doesn’t mean that we should decrease our service. Selection, price, and a pleasurable shopping experience are very important for your company’s growth.

2. Additional Investment: Make changes to the product you are selling; consider updating the appearance of your website or packaging. If your clients come to you then consider making some small improvements, like lighting, painting, and if your space allows new furniture; especially for customers to sit and enjoy your product.

3. Research: Create a forum by which you could learn about your customers or clients needs. Study your market for trends and technology.

4. Keep at it: Don’t give up. Don’t allow negative changes in your area to stifle your dreams. Be open to new directions and ideas.

Lastly, remember your purpose, live with passion, and stay true to who you are. Be honest, embrace integrity, and take some time for yourself and family.

CLOSED DOORS ARE JUST DISGUISES

So, you lost your job, business, or maybe that great client. You know the one that could have catapulted your success to greater heights or at least would win you the corner office. Well, I feel your pain. I know it hurts like crazy. You blame yourself and ponder over every word and detail in your head as if you cause the thud behind you. What could you have done differently, you ask yourself? I don’t think it would have matter much honestly. I believe that when a door closes another opportunity will arise. But that new opportunity will not surface until you let go of your last experience. The results of your unwillingness to let go could be catastrophic to your future. Your emotions will beat you down. Depression will come in like a thief and steal away all you have left. Because you do have other things left you know! Valuable things, like your family, friends, church and your health. There are even business colleagues who would help if only you would reach out to them.

Your suffering is understandable but your need to overcome this is imperative. You must attack this crisis as hard as it is attacking you. Fight against the effects of despondency and doubt and continue to pursue your dreams, perhaps through a different avenue. Realize that although the door may have been a great opportunity, it will not be the final one in your life. Maybe the timing wasn’t right and the shutting door experience was a way of protecting you from an unforeseen business chaos or collapse. Perhaps you avoided a disaster and someone did you a favor. There is someone looking out for you in case you forgot. There is a God that knows you intricately and knows what is good for you; even if His perspective is different from yours. He is a watchman and will guard you through this crisis, but you must trust him.

I’ve learned in my own school of suffering that trust means letting go; to release and confide that your issue will be handled by a more capable person. That person is the calmer of the storms of life, his name is Jesus. You see before you had plans for yourself, God had plans for you. His words are confirmed in the greatest business and leadership manual ever written, the Bible. Here is what God says concerning you – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

God is the best connection to have for your career goals, He is the best network tool, He is the most successful executive of all time, and he wants to partner with you. He knows how to open doors of prosperity. He knows all about sales, marketing, healthcare, finance, engineering, and technology. His business plans have never failed. He wants to merge with your goals and acquire your heart. He will never lay you off and he will always give you a raise. He will give you more than the corner office; he will expand your business and enlarge territory. God will work it all out for you because it is a promise from Him. It’s a promise not made from Wall Street with strings attached, or a government backed loan of credit. It is a guaranteed contract with no interest involved. He understands your pain and He is here for you.

Listen, I know you could overcome this temporary setback. You are talented and skilled, you’re a strong and you are an over comer. Rise up, wash off the soot, and put on your best attitude. Trust that the doors that closed were just new opportunities that were hiding under a disguise. Don’t let these disguises distract you from seeing what is
ahead. Today it’s a new day. Take it because it’s yours.

YOU DON'T NEED A TITLE TO BE A LEADER

Titles, titles, and more titles, we’ve become a generation of names and labels. We feel secure and conformed when we are given titles that for a moment seem to suit our purpose. O, but how wrong we are! Unless we lead with genuine dedication, titles will always deceive us. America has followed titles in suits and has suffered the consequences of its bad choices. A true leader is not one with a title but someone who lives with a moral code of honor to service that is unmoved by greed and corruption. A true leader navigates his followers through the rough seas of life unscathed, and ports the ship of opportunity on a land of new horizons. Who is this untitled leader? Well this person is not perfect. This leader has a few short comings, and some bad habits. He probably doesn’t own a $5k suit and fine leather shoes. His hair probably isn’t cut, blow dried and styled at the salon every two weeks, and his car isn’t the most luxurious.

So who is it then? This leader is one who lives knowing that life is not just about them but it’s about a chance to help others in need. This untitled leader is not afraid to be true when temptation nudges or isn’t influenced to leave others behind. This silent navigator and willing conductor of those who follow, is a leader who is strong & honor bound to everyone he serves. Passion driven and unbiased to his team’s diversity, a leader will complete his journey. If this leader had face I think he would look just like YOU! Yes you. Maybe you have been told that you are not good enough or lack a particular skill. Don’t sink into the lie that you can’t succeed because a title has escaped you. I want to encourage you to believe that you are more than just a title or a name. You are a living breathing spirit of ideas, talents, and resolve. Use those assets and continue to pursue excellence. Keep working toward your dreams and don’t let the voices of doubt stop you. I am confident that if you do these things you will live a satisfying life that will reward you beyond your expectations. Take charge of all that has been entrusted to you and eventually you will discover that you don’t need a title to be a leader.
